Resource Recovery

Recovery, Reuse and Replenishment

Resource Recovery
Recovery operations at BioEnergy Hawaii are designed to optimize the reuse of the individual material components of the waste stream by producing multiple value products in the form of high-value recyclables, separated organics, and engineered fuel. Hawai‘i has unique challenges - and many opportunities - that need to be addressed in order to develop sustainable resource management operations. BioEnergy Hawaii has developed a project design that allows for flexible material processing operations, which can easily adapt to fluctuations in the recyclable commodity market, as well as the energy demand and agricultural needs of the surrounding community.

Material Receiving and Pre-Processing
All handling and processing of the incoming waste material is conducted within an enclosed building to provide screening from public view and ensure adequate dust and odor control. Once the waste material is deposited onto the tipping floor, visual inspections and first level sorting are performed to separate large unusable items. The remaining accepted material is placed onto a conveyor system that feeds into the processing equipment. The material is first reduced in size and then screened and separated by composition to optimize the sorting and recovery operations. Recyclable materials are recovered through a combination of automated and manual recovery operations.

The remaining post-recycled material is separated into two primary categories for further processing and treatment. The organic waste is separated and treated in order to generate a renewable biogas and produce a stabilized high-nutrient organic material suitable for compost and liquid fertilizers. The inorganic and high heating value material is separated and processed to produce an engineered solid fuel - a dry, light material suitable for thermal energy conversion operations. By recovering and utilizing the individual waste components, the operations are designed to provide a minimum 70% landfill diversion rate. The remaining 30% residue (consisting primarily of inert material) can safely be disposed in the County landfill.
